Roses and Valentines Day
Roses are associated with Valentines Day as the perfect gift. And they are. What a wonderful way of expressing how you really feel without ever having to say a word. And who could ask for a better gift than the sweet aroma of a bouquet of roses.
Saint Valentine
Roses are a traditional yearly gift on Valentines Day and it made me think, who is Valentine and why do we honor him by sending Valentines to our loved ones each year?
Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. There was an Emperor named Claudius. Claudius outlawed marriage among his soldiers, thinking that single men made far better soldiers than married. Valentine decided this just wasn't fair or right to hold men back from being with their true loves through the vows of marriage and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Claudius found out about Valentine's actions he had him put to death. That is just one "legend," here is the other.
Valentine was an imprisoned and fell in love with the prison wardens daughter. Before he was put to death he wrote her a letter proclaiming his love and signed it 'Your Valentine', therefore becoming the first of many Valentines.
Whatever the legend, roses are a respected and expected gift on Valentines Day, don't forget to show how much you care.
Red Rose
Red Roses are the perfect way to say "I love You." For centuries the red rose has been interpreted as: strong feelings, attraction and love. So it is no wonder why the red rose is the most popular on Valentines Day.
Whether you are in a committed relationship or wanting to show that special someone that you are ready for that next step, red roses are the perfect choice.
Pink Rose
Pink roses are a symbol for love, gratitude, gentility, femininity, elegance and refinement. That's alot of meanings for one little flower. The pink rose carries additional meanings depending on its hue. A deep pink conveys gratitude and appreciation, while pale shades refer to grace and gentleness, admiration and happiness.
White Rose
Representing, humility, purity and innocence, the white rose is common for 'new' or 'young' love. The relationship is at it's purest and rarest form making it innocent and loyal. The white rose is perfect for those in a fresh marriage, a wedding itself or a new found love.
Other Colors and Meaning
- Yellow - it's meaning used to be jealousy, (although I never understood why you would send flowers saying you were jealous) But now is defined as friendship, although, a yellow rose with Red tip indicates friendship that is falling in love
- Lilac/Purple- this gorgeous colored rose is tied to enchantment and desire. A great Valentine flower as it portrays Love at First Sight
- Orange- warm in color it symbolizes just that. Warmth. If you’re looking for a way to express admiration and attraction, this is just the rose to do so.
- Coral- conveys desire
Feel free to mix your arrangement to White and Red meaning love and purity or Purple, White and Pink meaning innocent love at first sight. Or a single red rose saying...'I still love you'
No matter how you say it- just send it- with Roses.
